Know what to plant and plant what you know!

Gardening is a hobby of trial and error, but doing a little research can save you some of the hardships that come with that process. You can learn from other peoples mistakes. Every gardener had to start somewhere. One of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen people make while planting a garden is planting foods they won’t eat. Why put all of your time, effort, and money in to food that you do not like? Just because it is easy to grow? What good is an easy to grow vegetable, if you won’t eat it? The best way to decide what to plant is to take a piece of paper and write down all of your favorite dishes; entrees, snacks, desserts, everything. From that list take another piece of paper and write down all of the ingredients that you could grow in your garden. Take the time to think very hard. What do you like to eat? What herbs do you use to cook? What could grow in abundance to can and store easily? After that it’s easy. All you have to do is buy the seeds and plant them!! Do some research and see what plants don’t grow well with other. See what plants grow better with others. Also, check when each plant should be planted. (Spinach doesn’t grow well in hot humid Arkansas summers. I found that out this summer.)
